Do you want to make your own WordPress blog? Do you want to know what all it takes to get it up and running? Then consider yourself lucky because you found this post. I am going to tell you how I created my first website from scratch, what all problems I faced and finally how I managed to sue them off. After reading this post, you will not only be able to start your own website but end up gaining a first-hand experience of the same.
It was nearly four months back when I got influenced by some of the blogs and their contributions. At that point I thought of making a blog. So I visited my friend’s home to discuss about the same. He liked my idea. We did all the hard work but end up getting nothing but disappointment. We left the idea for about 3 months.
After that I decided to continue this project myself. Like everybody, I knew that building a website with website builder is just a piece of cake. But limitations were that we couldn’t customize it whichever way we want.
So I thought of giving WordPress a try. I installed WordPress on my domain “www.brainunlocker.com” manually. You can use 1-click setup program which is offered by hosts for installing WordPress easily. I also I installed WordPress on windows with Wamp server for testing purpose. This is just an optional thing if you want to try things out before showing it to the world.
Enough stories, now I will be disclosing step by step procedure which I followed while creating this blog.
Buying domain is the first thing. I bought my domain from namecheap. You can get your domain name from Godaddy at a cheaper price of Rs 111 including ICANN fee. Choosing a domain name is important. It is the address people use to visit your blog or website. It is like an identity card. Having a great name can give you immense success.
Few tips you should keep in mind while creating a domain:
- You should choose domain ending with .com because it is recognized as Top Level Domain (TLD).
- You should choose domain pertaining to your niche (content).
- You should choose domain contacting keywords relevant to your niche.
- You should choose domain which is easy to spell and remember.
- Be creative while creating a domain.
Buying Hosting Package
Now the second step is to buy a hosting package. There are almost 100’s of hosting companies. Since, it was my first website so I decided to for cheap and reliable. If you can spend some money in hosting then you should go for Hostgator. Check Hostgator Review.
I didn’t have to change nameserver because I bought domain and hosting from same company. If you have a domain which came free with hosting package then, you need not follow this step because your host will configure nameserver themselves. If you are not among this category then you will have to configure nameserver. Follow the below steps for changing your nameserver.
When you buy hosting package from your hosting company, they will send you the name of their nameserver which looks something like.
You need to point your domain to those servers. So all you got to do is to login to your domain control panel and look for something like “change nameserver”. Just put your hosting nameservers there and save. Hurry!! You have completed all the legal procedures.
As you would have learnt in your school days that database is a place where data is stored. Below are the steps to create a database.
- Step 1: Login to your hosting cPanel account.
- Step 2: Click on “Create Database” or simply “Database” or “MySQL Database”.
- Step 3: Enter username and password.
- Step 4: Now save the database.
Remember to use strong username and password. Don’t use social media username and password
I installed WordPress manually, but I won’t recommend doing so for beginners. Most hosts provide 1-click WordPress install program. All you got to do is login to your cPanel and click on 1-click setup program and choose WordPress. Follow the on screen instructions and you are done.
Once all the steps are completed successfully, you will receive a confirmation email. Now you can login to admin panel at www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin.
Themes & Plugins
After I logged in to my admin cPanel, the first thing I did was, uploaded a theme which I bought. I initially used Eleven40 pro child theme based on Genesis framework because it was simple and effective. You can buy this package from Studiopress.
A theme can change the whole look of your blog, so choose accordingly. Apart from themes, plugins are also used to customize the looks and features. There is huge number of plugins available to enhance the features of blog. Some of the plugins which I used are:
- WordPress SEO by Yoast
- W3 Total Cache
- Contact Form 7
- Mailchimp newsletter
Now the last step is to create pages and publish your posts. Just write some great content with compelling title and click on publish. Your site is now live with a post published, themes and plugins installed.
Customising WordPress is long process and differ from individual to individual. I will write a post or two on the same very soon, so that you can make more from WordPress.
By now, you might have learnt all the steps and things required to make your own WordPress blog. I hope this post would have helped in giving what you wanted. If you found this post informative, do share it with others. If you have any question, kindly comment below.
